Build Your Own Gabion Pond: Here's How

An elevated pond lets you enjoy water even in a small space: right next to the patio, beside the seating area, or as a striking focal point in the garden. If you want to build a gabion raised pond yourself, you can combine the natural look of quarry stone with a clean, modern design. The result can be a truly striking feature—provided that the subsoil, basin, and technical systems are properly planned from the start.

A gabion raised pond is no ordinary decorative feature. Water adds weight: one liter weighs about one kilogram. For a 1,000-liter pond, you also have to factor in the weight of the stones, mesh, and other components. Careful planning therefore ensures not only a beautiful ambiance but, above all, a structurally sound and stable foundation.

Build Your Own Gabion Pond: Plan First, Then Assemble

Before you choose a liner, stones, and pond equipment, determine the dimensions, location, and intended use. Is the pond meant to be just a calm body of water, a mini-pond with plants, or a home for fish? Compact dimensions are often sufficient for plants and calm water surfaces. For fish, you’ll need significantly more water volume, a reliable filtration system, and sufficient depth to prevent the water temperature from fluctuating too much.

Rectangular shapes are practical because they make it easy to plan gabion baskets, inner basins, and covers. Square elevated ponds also have a modern look and take up little space. Make sure to leave at least one easily accessible side around the pond. You’ll need to be able to access that side later to maintain the pump, filter, water level, and plants.

The location plays a key role in determining water quality and maintenance requirements. Full sun promotes warming and can encourage algae growth. Deep shade, on the other hand, limits the selection of aquatic plants. A spot that gets a few hours of sun but avoids prolonged midday heat is a good compromise for many projects. Avoid locations directly under trees with heavy foliage: falling leaves pollute the water and make frequent cleaning necessary.

Choose Dimensions, Mesh Size, and Stone Filling Wisely

The depth of the gabion wall determines how much stone it can hold and how prominent the raised pond appears. Narrow walls look delicate but require particularly carefully selected stones for filling. For the visible outer surfaces, the stones should be larger than the mesh size so that they do not fall out.

Natural stone has a strong impact on a space’s character. Light-colored limestone creates a warm, Mediterranean feel; basalt appears clean and high-contrast; and granite is timeless and serene. Be sure to choose frost-resistant stones and an appropriate grain size. The appearance will be particularly harmonious if you lay attractive exposed stones by hand on the exterior and economically fill the interior with a suitable infill material.

Don't calculate the amount of stone based solely on the exterior dimensions. What matters is the total volume of all the gabion walls. Plan for a small surplus, since the stones will settle with gaps between them, and you may want to place individual, particularly attractive pieces specifically on the visible side.

The foundation supports the entire elevated pond

A level, load-bearing surface is the most important foundation. A small- to medium-sized elevated pond can often be built on an existing, intact concrete slab if the slab’s load-bearing capacity is sufficient for the planned total load. For natural soil, a frost-resistant structure is required. Depending on the size, soil type, and weight, this can be a compacted gravel bed with concrete slabs or a continuous concrete foundation.

First, remove the topsoil and soft layers of soil. Compact the subgrade in layers and level the surface precisely. Even minor unevenness will be visible in a tall, water-filled structure and can place undue stress on the pool. Therefore, check the level in both directions using a long spirit level or a leveling device.

For larger ponds, difficult soil conditions, or when stocking fish, it’s worth having the load distribution professionally assessed in advance. This is especially true if the pond is to be located near a house wall, patio, the edge of a slope, or a property line. In such cases, a customized assessment is more useful than general construction guidelines.

This is how the gabion structure is built

Install the gabion baskets on the prepared foundation according to their intended shape. Coils or C-rings connect the mesh panels, and spacers stabilize the walls against the pressure of the stone fill. Space them evenly along the height and length. They keep the front surfaces at a consistent distance and ensure that your gabion maintains its clean lines.

In the case of an elevated pond, the gabion typically consists of a surrounding stone basket into which a separate, watertight inner basin is inserted. The gabion itself does not hold water. This clear separation is a major advantage: the stone structure provides the design and stability, while the inner basin provides the waterproofing.

Fill the baskets section by section. Place the facing stones along the outer edges, with the flat, attractive side facing outward whenever possible. After each layer, check to make sure the mesh and spacers are still in place. Do not simply pour large amounts of stones in from above. This can damage coatings, warp the mesh, and ruin the carefully arranged exposed surface.

A clean finish along the upper edge is essential. A covering made of matching slabs, wooden planks, or specially designed elements creates a comfortable seating or storage area. At the same time, it conceals the transition to the inner pool. However, make sure access to the equipment remains available and do not permanently seal off maintenance openings.

How to Properly Install an Indoor Pool and Waterproof It

For a long-lasting result, a prefabricated pond liner is usually the simplest solution. It should be selected to fit the interior dimensions and must not come into contact with any sharp edges of the gabion. A protective layer, such as a suitable geotextile, provides additional protection for the liner against pressure marks and friction.

Alternatively, you can use pond liner. This option is suitable for custom sizes and irregular shapes, but requires significantly more care. A protective geotextile should be placed under the liner to prevent small stones or edges from damaging it. Folds should be smoothed out as much as possible and should not be secured under tension. Any leak will be much harder to find later than if you prepare everything carefully before filling the pond.

Plan the inlets and outlets for the equipment before the pool is permanently installed. Cables and hoses can be neatly concealed behind a gabion wall, but must remain accessible. A pump should never be pulled out of the water by the power cord alone. An easily accessible service shaft or a removable cover will save you a lot of time during maintenance.

Balancing Water, Plants, and Technology

For purely decorative elevated ponds, a small circulation pump is often enough to keep the water moving. A spouting stone, a subtle water outlet, or a small waterfall adds extra life to the feature. Water with more movement sounds beautiful, but it increases evaporation and can quickly make small ponds look choppy.

Plant baskets are helpful for planted ponds. They keep the substrate in place and make seasonal maintenance easier. Choose plants that are suitable for the water depth: Some species prefer the shallow edges, while others need deeper water. In this case, less is often more. An overcrowded mini-pond quickly looks messy and makes maintenance more difficult.

Fish are only suitable to a limited extent in small raised ponds. They require sufficient volume, oxygen, filtration capacity, and stable temperatures. If you’re looking for a low-maintenance water feature, a planted raised pond without fish is often the more relaxing choice.

Don't forget about safety and maintenance

Even a raised basin can pose a risk to small children and pets. The height of the gabion reduces the danger, but it is no substitute for careful planning. If there are children in the household, sturdy covers or protective grilles may be a good idea. Also, check to make sure all edges are neatly finished and that no loose stones are sticking out.

In the fall, remove fallen leaves, check the pump, and trim back dead plant parts. Before the first frost, depending on the model, the equipment should either be removed from the water or operated in a frost-proof manner. Complete freezing can cause damage, especially if water remains in pipes or enclosed components.
